Steve Dancy Files - Leadville
Leadville, at 10,350 feet, is the highest elevation city in the USA. At the time of the book, 1879, the town had a population in excess of 18,000. Leadville was, and continues to be, the greatest mining district in Colorado. By 1879, over ten million dollars of silver was extracted each year from the immediate region.
Much like Tombstone, Arizona, Leadville was a male dominated society with an odd mixture of culture and rowdiness. People with money brought the brought the greatest entertainment of the era to Leadville, but the State Street red light district simultaneously provided distractions of another sort.
Doc Holliday, the Earps, Bat Masterson, and the Youngers all visited Leadville. Sometimes things went beyond rowdy and it's reputed that Doc Holliday had his last shootout in Leadville.
